“I was a once a Jedi Knight the same as your father”
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Sometimes The Fans Can Do It better
Ok so that title might be a bit unfair, but I do think that there are hundreds of examples of when fans improved upon something we love.Today we are looking at one such example.
If you’ve seen the original Star Wars then you’ll know the scene I’m going to talk about. Luke Skywalker, after being attack by some Tusken Raiders is rescued by Obi-Wan Kenobi. They then go back to Obi-Wan’s home in the desert for Luke to rest up a bit.
While they are there Obi-Wan proceeds to give Luke his lightsaber and tell tell him of how he knew his father. He then tells Luke of how a young Jedi Knight named Darth Vader killed Anakin (Luke’s Dad) and it’s all a bit sad for Luke.
A little bit down the line though we learn that Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker are one and the same. A long way down the line (or in the past in film world) we learn that it was Obi-Wan that wounded Anakin and effectively turned him into the hulking, black leather wearing dark lord of the Sith that we see today.
Still one of the best scenes of the whole sage, don’t @me. Say what you like about Hayden Christensen’s acting during the prequels but him screaming “I HATE YOU!” during this scene is powerful.
And here’s where the fandom stepped in and made it all a bit better (in my opinion).
Look I can see why people don’t want people messing with stuff like this but I really like clips like this. Sometimes the fans can make stuff better.
There are a few variations of this video out there with clips from the prequel movies, the Clone Wars tv show etc but they go on for over five minutes. The beauty of this one is that it is short and sweet and doesn’t focus to much on flashy visuals, just the stuff that’s important.
Whoever edited this managed to perfectly grab some of Alec Guinness’ subtle facial expressions and mix them perfectly with memories (clips) of Revenge of the Sith. Almost grabbing at the PTSD that Obi-Wan must have from that war.
The bit at the end with Obi-Wan’s face as he remembers Anakin dying (You were my brother Anakin, I loved you) is haunting.
Thanks for reading! Until next time, remember to take care of yourselves. Peace!
Obi-Wan (from the Clone Wars TV show) being a sassy troll. It’s pretty much all he did in that show.
