Gotta Have Faith

“I felt I was understood in a way I felt no one else could. That is the thing with music, it feels like music understands what you are going through.”

The First (I Think?)

I’ve written about interesting cover versions a couple of time before now for my Awesomeverse collection, and today I wanted to share another one with you. But when I was looking through the catalogue, one in particular jumped out at me for whatever reason. But before we get to that, let’s got to the copy pasting!

What I originally wanted to do here was do a Top 10 about my favourite Punk Covers. But there are just to many that I love. So I’m gonna take the opportunity to talk about some of them individually.

You’ve all heard covers before, even if you didn’t know you had.

Whether it’s songs like Hallelujah by Rufus Wainright (from Shrek), All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix, Mad World by Gary Jules (Donnie Darko) and loads of songs you probably didn’t even know were covers.

Covers are interesting to me. They can split people right down the middle. When I was in school, Busted covered Teenage Kicks by The Undertones which is one of my favourite songs of all time.

I fucking HATED the Busted version. Suddenly everyone “knew” the song and it was used as ringtones that would drive me nuts when they went off. I now realise how hipster of me this sounds but I stand by it.

But lets get back on track. I’m here to talk about a particular type of cover, the “Punk Cover”. The most famous Punk Cover has to be Sid Vicious singing My Way (Frank Sinatra) and while it’s slurry, incoherent absolute insult to the original I still really love it.

Punk has always been a music with high energy, fast pace and badly tuned guitars. I was raised on Punk music so when I discovered Punk Covers I was a very happy teenager.

Sometimes Punk Covers are just fast paced versions. Sometimes they are complete nonsense. And sometimes they can change the meaning of a song entirely.

So let’s take a look at some music fuckery in the form of a Punk Cover.

Faith – Originally by George Michael – Covered by Limp Bizkit

Yes this one isn’t a Punk Cover but it’s still music fuckery so I’m counting it 😛 .

A lot of people probably don’t like this song at all, let alone it’s cover version but the oft ridiculed band Limp Bizkit. So why have I decided to include it in the Awesomeverse then?

Well this might be the first cover, that messed with the original’s style, that I ever heard. It’s definitely the first I remember thinking “wow, they really changed this”.

Faith is one of George Michael‘s best known songs. It’s a campy ballad that I can’t help singing along with.

Then came along Limp Bizkit, a rap rock band from the early 2000s that a lot of people my age were obsessed with, even if they won’t admit to that now.

It’s not the best cover you’ll ever here, not by a long shot. But it was one of the first I remember acknowledging as a “unique” cover and it gave lonely teenagers something to headbang along with in their bedrooms. It does make me smile thinking of me and my friends headbanging along to lyrics written by one of the campest men in music.

RIP George, you were one of the greats.

So which do you prefer? Original or Cover? (Is this even fair this time round?)

If you can think of any covers you’d like me to talk about next then feel free to chuck me a message and we can have a chat 🙂 .

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you all next time. Until then, remember to take care of yourselves. Peace.

Another cover by Limp Bizkit, but the less said about it the better I think.

Any Thoughts?
