Matching Pieces From Different Jigsaws
I’ve talked about my love of Punk Covers a few times on this site now. For those who haven’t heard a Punk Cover, it is a cover of a song injected with some of Punk music’s energy.
Today however I’m hear to talk about another musical love that can be very hit and miss, the Mashup. For those who don’t know, a mashup is basically what it says on the tin, it takes two (or more) songs and mixes them together into one song. This is made pretty easy to accomplish since most modern pop songs (mostly) use the same four chords in the I–V–vi–IV progression.
So consider this another section of the Awesomeverse where I will share some more musical madness with you via the medium of Mashup.
A Green Oasis
This song mixes elements from Oasis’ Wonderwall, Green Day’s Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and a little cameo from Travis is thrown in for good measure.
The softer acoustic guitar riff of Wonderwall behind Bill Joe Armstrong’s singing just sounds right in my opinion. I couldn’t tell you why it works but even the bits where they kind of sing over each other in the choruses works for me.
Four Chords Of Awesome (Bonus Video)
In lieu of my usual Bonus Video section, I’m gonna use some space to talk about the king of all mashups: The Four Chord Song by the Axis of Awesome.
Using the chord progression I talked about above, the Australian comedy band demonstrate the art of the mashup perfectly. Always starting with Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey and ending with Scar by Missy Higgins, the band change up the songs included every time they tour which is as impressive as it is awesome.
In that music video you can hear the songs:
- Journey – “Don’t Stop Believin’“
- James Blunt – “You’re Beautiful“
- The Black Eyed Peas – “Where Is the Love“
- Alphaville – “Forever Young“
- Jason Mraz – “I’m Yours“
- Train – “Hey, Soul Sister“
- The Calling – “Wherever You Will Go“
- Elton John – “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” (from The Lion King)

- Bob Marley – “No Woman, No Cry“
- Marcy Playground – “Sex and Candy“
- Men At Work – “Down Under“
- Jill Colucci – “The Funny Things You Do” (Theme from America’s Funniest Home Videos)
- Jack Johnson – “Taylor“
- Spice Girls – “2 Become 1“
- a-ha – “Take On Me“
- Green Day – “When I Come Around“
- Eagle Eye Cherry – “Save Tonight“
- Toto – “Africa“

- Missy Higgins – “Scar“
I think it’s fair to say that they created something special.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you all next time. Until then, remember to take care of yourselves. Peace.
